About
By endorsing the manifesto of the Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed (Digital Heritage Network) and thus the National Digital Heritage Strategy, Maastricht University (UM) recognises the strength of the network and pursues its ambitions to make its digital heritage more visible, usable and sustainable. To achieve this, the Maastricht University Library participated in the national programme line of Linked Digital Heritage (Verbonden Digitaal Erfgoed). At the request of, and with a grant from, the Stichting Pica (a foundation that promotes and stimulates information provision in the Netherlands), the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB, the National Library of the Netherlands) established the programme line Linked Digital Heritage in 2021. This programme line aims to connect libraries’ dispersed heritage, making it available for use by different target groups of education, science, the creative industry and the general public.
On 31 March 2023, Maastricht University Library completed the first phase of the Linked Digital Heritage programme. The Library collaborated with KB and Stichting Pica on the pilot project 'Het licht is rond: Pierre Kemp verbonden.' This project explores how to present the poet Pierre Kemp's collection (1886-1967) through Linked Open Data to reach a broad audience. One significant outcome is the publication of a dataset describing information objects. This dataset, offered as Linked Open Data, includes metadata for letters, manuscripts, drawings, and even 3D-digitised physical objects. It also provides links to the digitised content in the University Library's Omeka S content management system, including Pierre Kemp's desk and an egg decorated with one of his poems.
